Firelands Winery, located in Sandusky, Ohio, is “the pioneer in establishing European Vinifera grape varieties in the East” (“Welcome to Firelands Winery,” 2017). Northwest Ohio offers the exciting opportunity to explore wineries off the shores of Sandusky and on Kelley’s Island and South Bass Island. One of these wineries, Mon Ami Historic Winery and Restaurant, “is one of the oldest wineries in the Lake Erie Islands region. The winery is of further significance as one of the four large co-operative wineries which played an important role in the development of the region's wine industry” (Mon Ami Historic Winery and Restaurant, n.d.).
